These are the issues which this book aims to address. A promotion of the use of technology within learning environments can only be successful if practitioners in the field have a clear idea of its benefits and are confident in its use. This book supports the view of Jim Rose and aims to help you to develop the ICT knowledge, understanding and skills required to enhance the teaching and learning of children and the administration and management in primary schools (and the foundation stage). Rose recommends that ICT be given increased priority because it has ‘the unique capacity and potential for developing and enlivening all domains of learning’ (Rose, 2008: 43). As one teacher reported,‘ICT is not working hard enough to support learning or to help us manage the curriculum’. In his 2008 review of the primary curriculum, Sir Jim Rose reported that, despite the increased emphasis and spending on technology in schools, the benefits are still not fully realised.
